Brighton Yoga Foundation is a registered charity dedicated to taking yoga to those who would benefit from it the most. We work with others in organising year-round yoga community outreach programmes. Currently, these include: yoga for women recovering from trauma and abuse, yoga for mental health, yoga in schools, yoga for stressed teenagers, yoga for the police. And we are in discussion with key NHS doctors and managers about the possibility of yoga being a key part of its “social prescribing” agenda. We are just about to launch our second grants programme – offering to fund a few innovative local yoga outreach projects. Our first programme funded projects for the very elderly and the very young, for women with depression, and for LGBT youngsters. Feedback from all our yoga outreach work has been great – with people commenting that they never thought yoga was “for them” but that they have benefited from it enormously.
Brighton Yoga Foundation also provides services for the yoga community. From next month we will have a Directory of Local Yoga Studios on our website, which will then expand to a directory for yoga teachers in and around the city too. It will provide a “one-stop shop” for those looking for classes, studios, and teachers in this area. We provide a yoga mat rental service for those teachers or studios who need extra mats for a specific event. We run the Brighton Yoga Teachers Forum with interesting topics for teachers every two months (the next one on Sunday 28 April). We are also chronicling the rich history of yoga in the city – with talks and interviews with those who were involved in the early days of yoga locally.

And of course, the Foundation runs the highly successful annual Brighton Yoga Festival – this year it is on 27/28 July at BHASVIC (Brighton Sixth Form College). This year promises to be bigger and better than ever with lots of exciting features lined up.

We also have a series of events coming up before the Festival:

* Also Saturday 13 April – an all-day Yogathon at The Unitarian Church, New Road from 11.30 – 7pm with yoga classes (donation-based – all proceeds to the Foundation)
